An Analysis of the Orchestration Techniques and Historical Style of the Tonic Chord in the First Movement of Beethoven’s Eighth Symphony
This study examines the three statements of the tonic chord that accompany the principal theme in the first movement of Beethoven’s Eighth Symphony, tracing the orchestrational treatment of each within the movement’s formal design. It identifies the constitutive features and shared procedures of Classical-period orchestration, notes Beethoven’s anticipations of Romantic practice, and considers the historical conditioning of orchestrational aesthetics and technique toward a grounded understanding of the composer’s orchestral thought.
