Upholding Fundamental Principles and Whole-Chain Integration: A Study on Sun Xiaosheng’s Thoughts and Practices in the Industrialization of Traditional Chinese Medicine
The industrialization of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a defining proposition of the time for the inheritance and innovation of Chinese medicine. Professor Sun Xiaosheng, who has devoted over forty years to the TCM field, has developed a systematic and comprehensive framework of theories and practices for TCM industrialization. This paper systematically examines his concepts and practical approaches from multiple dimensions: the theoretical construction of a green sustainable development evaluation system; early exploration of GAP-compliant cultivation and the systematic development of understory Chinese medicinal materials; industrial research on both authentic medicinal materials and introduced overseas botanicals; in-depth advancement of modern pharmacological research on TCM active ingredients; industry-university-research platforms driving a collaborative innovation ecosystem; regional planning for health-preserving cultural tourism; and industrial policy research. The study reveals that Professor Sun’s practices have evolved through three stages: from the cultivation source to whole-industry-chain integration, from experience-based inheritance to technology-empowered innovation, and from single products to the construction of an industrial ecosystem. The core ethos is “upholding fundamental principles while making innovations” — preserving the theoretical essence of TCM while creating modern industrial forms. This systematic pathway, spanning “from field to clinic, from classics to products, from introduction to localization, and from culture to industry,” offers a model worthy of reference for the high-quality development of the TCM industry.
